Sherry Gloag in "Name the Day" expertly weaves the tale of a renowned portrait artist whose commissioned work schedule collides with an Italian, multi-billionaire businessman's schedule and his insistence that he have a self-portrait completed for his fiancée as a Christmas present. Despite the fact that Samantha Brown is booked with contracts and sittings until the holidays, Rafael Santini is persistent. But when he fails to show for his scheduled dates, Samantha nullifies his contract.
Later, when Samantha learns her stepfather/father, (from whom she is estranged) has had a heart attack and is demanding she marry before her 25th birthday, she immediately is wary and distrusts her father's motives--especially since the prospective groom is Rafe Santini who has been planning a hostile take-over of his business. Without giving out spoilers, a series of incidents throw the couple together to try to discover why such ludicrous demands have been issued including a break-in to Samantha's work studio which causes further troubles and work delays for the young artist.
I particularly enjoyed the story because the heroine was not in a traditional or familiar occupation. I learned some interesting information about how a portrait artist operates and creates a work of art suitable for her clients. I had never thought about portrait size, placement, framing, or what the person receiving it as a gift might want or appreciate--and how the artist needs to consider all these details along with staging, color and clothing.
If you like independent, resilient heroines and sexy, good-looking heroes, "Name the Day" is the book for you. It's a delightful suspenseful story, and just right for a quick, pleasant read.

4.0 out of 5 starsA compelling read with well-drawn characters

Name the Day is a wonderful story that I enjoyed very much. It’s a quick read as I finished it in under a half day.
Samantha Brown is a twenty-four year old portrait artist with a great career. She lives alone after leaving her childhood home which never felt like a home in any way. Her mother passed away when Samantha was born and her father was distant and cruel. Samantha escaped three years before the story occurs.
Rafael Santini is a wealthy businessman who is used to getting his own way. When he decides he wants his portrait painted as a gift for his fiancée, he doesn’t let Samantha say no. After he obtains her consent, he disappears only to resurface when she’s at the ballet. He’s lost his fiancée but isn’t too broken-hearted about it.
Samantha receives a call that her father has had a heart attack and wants to see her. Torn about whether she wants to see him or not, she’s drawn into an odd situation when he demands that she marry Rafael Santini who happens to be working on a hostile takeover of her father’s business.
Things get complicated from there and in the interest of not giving spoilers, this reviewer won’t go into details on those other than to say that there are some secrets in an attic, a will, a home invasion as well as a growing attachment between Samantha and Rafael.
This story moved at a nice pace and I enjoyed the burgeoning relationship between the hero and heroine. The author clearly had fully formed back-stories on these characters, making them real and authentic. I enjoyed their depth. Samantha is a determined young woman who values her independence and won’t allow anyone to try to control her while Rafael is just as intense in his personality.
If you enjoy a story with a strong heroine, an undeniably intense and handsome hero who truly has the best interests of his chosen one in the forefront of his mind, some intrigue and mystery as well as a dysfunctional family, this story is one for you. It’s complicated and compelling just like the characters.

4.0 out of 5 starsStrong Characters, Strong Story

Samantha is a successful artist who has her life under control and definitely doesn’t need a man to get what she wants. Rafael is a billionaire tycoon who is used to getting what he wants. When he tries to hire Samantha to paint his portrait by Christmas, he won’t take no for an answer, despite her full schedule.
But locking horns over a paint job is only the beginning for these two. Secrets, deceit, and will she didn’t know about throw her life into chaos when her father makes a crazy demand that she and Rafael get married by her 25th birthday. Her marry the demanding man that she just met?
Name the Day is filled with twists as Samantha and Rafael work to uncover the reason behind her father’s actions and discover more than they bargained for. Written in third person narrative, Ms. Gloag did a great job of sharing the inner struggles of the main characters. Each had very developed back story to make them well rounded and strong personalities. A little closer eye to editing would smooth a few places out. But, for a story of reluctant love, mystery, and suspense, pick up Name the Day!

5.0 out of 5 starsEven the most stubborn heart succumbs to the power of Love.

The story of Samantha and Rafael is one of self discovery and falling in love. Initially, each denied their attraction to the other. But Fate kept bringing them together until the message rang loud and clear. It was entertaining to see each work through their misperceptions and struggle with events seemingly out of their control. The truth of Sam's childhood revealed many previously unknown connections. Enjoyed the story and would recommend it to anyone seeking an entertaining read. I was given an ARC in exchange for an honest review. Five Stars!

ARC FOR AN HONEST REVIEW
Well the story of Rafe and Samantha was such a heart warming story. It is about family betrayal and what one won't do to get what they want. When all the deceit and fraud come to fruition you won't be able to believe it. Why anyone would think that they could control another person's life the way they this man way trying to do is awful. But this book will show you that life when it takes a turn you better be ready to grab on and hold on tight for the ride. This was a well written story for the ages.
